WCEC – weekly project update

Piling
This week we’ve made good progress we now have 146 pile casings in the ground so that’s about 2/3rds through. Our Contractors have been driving piles in the south-west area so the vibration levels being felt by 181 Wakefield Street have been larger than usual due to proximity. We are very aware the construction of the site has had an impact on the neighbours and are very appreciative of everyone’s patience and tolerance.

Interestingly, the Canterbury Earthquake Royal Commission is keen on driven piles as they have “…..significant advantages over other pile types for reducing settlements in earthquake-resistant design….” It is a piling system we expect to see more new projects using.

As noted in our last update, the contractors are running ahead of the programme and the piling phase is estimated to be completed by the end of March.

Building Works
Another zone of site concrete will be going down next week which will help with containing the dust.

Slab reinforcing and work on the pile caps will get underway in the zone closest to Portal and preparation for the second crane base will also advance. Below is a photo taken from Cable Street.
